The Grey Horse Bartram Place, Shiremoor
Built 1828 from plaque on wall.
Does anyone know the history of the long demolished houses on the left of the Inn ?
The Blue Bell – Shiremoor
The Blue Bell pub, located on Earsdon Road in Shiremoor, a historic public house and railway crossing named after the local Blue Bell Pit, which was part of the Backworth Collieries network. The pub served the colliery village of Shiremoor, which was established in the 19th and 20th centuries to accommodate miners. Shiremoor as we know it today did not exist st that time.
Nearby, a brickworks operated from 1937 until 1965, known as Backworth Brickworks but initially associated with the Blue Bell Pit. The Inn picked up it’s name from the pit & brickworks
The Pub is on the right, stand in the same place today and you can still see most of the buildings features, even after conversion to rental flats.
The renamed JD Wetherspoon at Holystone used the Blue Bell name as a local homage. The crossing point for the waggonway is still there, albeit a zebra crossing today, the signal box is long gone.
